Hats off to the opening of the Welland Canal

As clocks spring forward this weekend and the first day of spring is less than two weeks away, the opening of the Welland Canal is sure to follow. Port Colborne’s Top Hat Ceremony celebrates the opening of the Welland Canal and start of the 2022 shipping season by welcoming the captain of the first downbound vessel.

Kicking off the festivities on Sunday, Mar. 20, 2022, St. James and St. Brendan Anglican Church (55 Charlotte Street, Port Colborne) will host a Mariner’s Service at 7 p.m.

6M Contracting Limited will be completing site servicing work at 235 Sugarloaf Street on Wednesday, March 9, 2022. To accommodate this work, Sugarloaf Street will be closed between Isabel Street and Fielden Avenue on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The roadway is expected to re-open by 6 p.m.

City Public Works staff are responding to a watermain break at

-        Davis Street, between Kinnear Street and Rodney Street

Omer Avenue, between Kinnear Street and Rodney Street will also be closed until approximately 5:30 p.m. as crews work to repair the break.

Residents in these areas may experience a disruption in water service.
