Crossing guards have the authority, under the Highway Traffic Act section 176, to require approaching vehicles to stop for a school crossing. The use of this authority must be displayed in a confident, decision, understanding and fair manner.

How can parents help?

  • Plan a safe walking route with your child
  • Become familiar with your School Crossing Guard's schedule
  • Set a good example; obey all traffic signs
  • Encourage your child not to wear headphones when walking near traffic
  • Encourage your child to walk their bicycle, carry their skateboard, etc. when crossing the road

How can motorists help?

  • Stop before reaching a crosswalk when the stop sign is upright
  • Stop when the School Crossing Guard and the children are preparing to cross or are in the roadway
  • Remain stopped until all children have crossed safely and the school crossing guard has exited the roadway
  • Be courteous and attentive if you see a School Crossing Guard. Obey the crossing guard at all school crossing
  • Obey speed limits and community safety zones at all times
  • Motorist who fail to obey the directions of a School Crossing Guard are liable to a fine
