The City of Port Colborne supports tree planting and protection through community giveaways, planting rebates, partnerships and long-term urban forest planning. These initiatives help increase the City's tree canopy, support biodiversity and create healthy, attractive spaces for residents and visitors.
Tree Giveaways
The City hosts tree giveaways to encourage residents to plant trees and help grow Port Colborne's urban forest.
- Open to Port Colborne residents only. Proof of address is required.
- Limit of one tree per household.
- Trees are typically provided in 1- to 2-gallon pots.
- Tree species are subject to availability. Trees are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Advance reservations are not accepted.
- Trees must be planted on private residential property in a side or backyard, not on City property.
Residents are responsible for planting and caring for their trees. Before choosing a tree, consider how much space it will need once fully grown.
Contact Ontario One Call before digging to request utility locates.

Tree Planting Rebate Program
Residents who purchase an eligible tree from the approved list, based on the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority's native plant guide, can receive a rebate of up to $50.
A limited number of rebates are available each year and are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tree Planting Partnerships
Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority – Trees for All
The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) works with community groups, environmental organizations and government partners to increase tree planting across the Niagara Peninsula watershed.
Through the Niagara Peninsula Tree Planting Partnership, the Trees for All program supports Canada's goal of planting two billion trees.
Private landowners in Niagara, Haldimand and Hamilton are encouraged to express interest in tree planting opportunities on their properties. This information helps identify future planting projects and funding opportunities.

Urban Forest Management Plan
In July 2024, Council approved Port Colborne's first Urban Forest Management Plan. [PDF/8.3MB]
Developed with input from residents, City staff and consultants, the plan provides a roadmap for protecting and growing the City's urban forest over the next five years and beyond.
The plan aligns with the City's Asset Management Plan for natural assets and considers community priorities, operational needs and financial resources. It identifies opportunities to increase tree canopy coverage, protect existing trees and support a healthy urban forest.
