I want to acknowledge the recent discussions regarding potential changes to municipal governance in Niagara. I am disappointed in how this matter has come forward, as conversations of this magnitude require a thoughtful, transparent process supported by meaningful consultation with municipalities, residents, and community partners. Decisions that could fundamentally reshape how our communities are governed should not be advanced without careful analysis and open dialogue, and in consultation with the established Council at the Niagara Region.
At the same time, I do believe there is merit in reviewing aspects of governance to address some of the issues that have been identified, particularly at the upper-tier level. Municipalities across Niagara continue to face challenges related to the delivery and cost of major infrastructure, including water, wastewater, and regional roads. We have seen firsthand how duplication and complexity can contribute to higher costs for taxpayers, and I support efforts to examine how we can improve coordination, increase efficiency, and control costs for taxpayers.
However, any governance review must recognize that Niagara is made up of diverse communities, each with their own economic strengths, infrastructure needs, growth patterns, and local priorities.
Port Colborne is a strong, independent community that has already made significant strides and continues to build momentum for the future. We are attracting new investment, strengthening our marine and industrial sectors, and advancing local initiatives that support sustainable living and affordability for residents. It is important that any discussion about governance builds on this momentum and respects the unique role and contributions of communities across Niagara. I believe in a strong and independent Port Colborne today and for years to come.
As Mayor and in collaboration with Port Colborne Council and Regional Council, I will continue to advocate for a process that is transparent, inclusive, and grounded in evidence. I am committed to working collaboratively with our Council, our residents, and our partners across Niagara to ensure that the path forward reflects the needs and interests of our community and supports strong, effective local government across the region.
