Water in creek

For Wednesday February 16th, 2022, this notice is intended to advise the public and local municipalities of the potential for flooding within the NPCA’s jurisdiction as it relates to the Niagara Peninsula and the eastern portions of Haldimand County and the City of Hamilton.

Our area is currently under a Special Weather Statement as issued by Environment Canada, which is calling for a messy mix of wintry weather from this Wednesday evening into Friday. Prior to the arrival of the storm, temperatures will be well above freezing and this will serve to melt the existing snowpack, which is storing between 50 to 70mm of water. The forecast is also calling for the possibility of 25mm or more of rain from Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon. This rainfall combined with snowmelt will cause significant runoff causing water levels in local creeks and rivers to increase.

Current water levels in local watercourses are running above average but are below critical thresholds.  It is anticipated that flooding of low lying, flood prone areas will occur. Additionally, there is an increased risk of flooding due to ice jams as the warm temperatures and increased runoff serve to break up ice on local watercourses. Water levels will likely remain high for several days.

Residents are urged to keep themselves, their children and their pets well away from streams and creeks as these watercourses may become hazardous. Local municipalities are advised to check for debris clogging culverts, catch basins and other storm infrastructure.

The NPCA will continue to monitor these conditions and will issue further messages as required. Information on the Flood Status in the watershed can be found on the NPCA’s website at:

This notice is in effect until 12:00 noon, Friday February 18th, 2022, and will be updated as required.
