Due to the inclement weather today, Niagara Region has announced that your regularly scheduled waste collection day during the week of Jan. 17 will be delayed by one day, with Friday's collection being completed on Saturday.

Due to the significant amount of snow we’re seeing, residents are also being reminded to place their garbage and recycling containers on their driveway near the edge of the road, not on top of snow banks.

Port Colborne has accumulated over 30 cm of snow (and counting!). Snow plow crews are currently working on priority roads and will move to secondary. Keeping parked cars off the roads will assist in enabling our plows to be more efficient in clearing roadways. Staff continue to monitor weather conditions as the storm continues and will provide updates.

A reminder that City facilities are closed, along with several other facilities and services across the City, including schools. Please stay home unless travel is essential.

Port Colborne is under a Winter Storm Warning with 25 to 40 cm of snow expected to fall by Monday night. Snowfall may be heavy at times, with rates of 2 to 5 cm per hour possible, which could significantly reduce visibility. Local blowing snow is also possible due to winds gusting up to 60 km/h.

Our Operations Crews will begin winter control operations at midnight, with nine crews deployed by 4 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 17 to clear priority roads as snow starts to accumulate (this also includes City parking lots). Crews will be focusing on keeping priority roads clear until the snow event is complete, and will follow with a full cleanup Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 4 a.m., followed by sanding operations. (Based on weather conditions this schedule could change).

Please don’t park where we plow. Parked cars make plowing difficult and sometimes impossible. If you park on the road during a snowfall, you are subject to a fine and your vehicle could be towed at your expense. With your help winter maintenance crews can plow snow faster and reduce the chances of your car being stuck in a snow drift.

A reminder to clear sidewalks within 24 hours after the snow event is complete. If you have a fire hydrant in front of your home, clear a 1-metre space around the fire hydrant. Every second counts when our fire fighters are fighting a fire.

See snow? Drive slow! A reminder to drive according to changing weather conditions.

Reminder: during Monday's winter storm, the Mellanby Avenue Bridge (19A) is scheduled to be closed for maintenance from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Plan your travel accordingly & drive safe.
