Lions Field reopening

A ribbon-cutting event celebrated the grand re-opening of Lions Field Park on 120 Killaly Street West in Port Colborne Wednesday, Sept. 24.

After adding a new ornamental perimeter fence, an archway feature, and planting new trees along Killaly Street West and Elm Street, the renovations have enhanced the public space in the heart of Port Colborne.

In the coming months, there will also be a new mural facing Killaly Street West, which will be painted after residents decide on a final design.

Port Colborne Mayor William Steele said the revitalisation project has given a facelift to an important part of town

“Lions Field is in the heart of Port Colborne and has welcomed generations of residents as they enjoy baseball and other recreational activities,” he said. “These upgrades will ensure the park continues to be a safe and picturesque place to visit for everyone.”

Work on the project began in June and received funding in two stages from Niagara Region's Public Realm Investment Program (PRIP).

Khaldoon Ahmad, Niagara Region’s Manager of Urban Design said Lions Field is an example of both tiers of municipal government working effectively together.

“Making memorable places in Niagara is at the core of building attractive, strong, and resilient communities,” he said. “This project sits on a Regional Road, and the PRIP program is focused on transforming Regional Roads into vibrant and rewarding complete streets where folks can walk, cycle, access transit, or drive.”

The park is also home to the annual Port Colborne Lions Club Carnival, which draws people from around the region for its famed donut fundraiser, along with numerous other events throughout the year.

Port Colborne Lions Director James Wilkins said the renovations will help the park and the Lions continue to serve the community for years to come.

“Lions field, created in1945, serves as a landmark to the pride with which the Port Colborne Lions serve the community. The upgrade, both functional and aesthetic, amplify that pride,” he said.
