The consultant hired by the City of Port Colborne to develop an affordable housing strategy is looking for residents to provide their input.

Tim Welch Consulting was awarded the project at the February 22, 2022, council meeting following a staff recommendation and a competitive request for proposal process. The 10-year strategy and action plan will provide staff and council with an analysis of economic and demographic datasets as well as insight into the barriers or issues that have impacted and currently impact the affordable housing supply in Port Colborne. It will also forecast the rate of Port Colborne’s housing need and make recommendations to improve affordability for groups with the greatest needs, such as seniors, newcomers to Canada, single-parent households, young adults, and Indigenous peoples.

Open May 2 and closing on May 13, 2022, at 11:59 p.m., Port Colborne residents can complete a short online survey on housing needs and preferences.

“Resident input will assist us in improving access to affordable housing options for Port Colborne’s growing population. Having this input is critical to creating a more inclusive community that everyone can call home,” said Gary Long, manager of strategic initiatives.

Together, city staff and the consultant will review the survey results and use them to inform the policy, incentive, and other key recommendations proposed in the final document. A draft of the strategy and action plan will be presented to council by Tim Welch Consulting in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Residents that complete the survey and provide an email address to stay updated on the project, will be entered to win one of three $25 grocery gift cards.
