An annual open house in Port Colborne is welcoming the community to explore various City vehicles and learn about fire safety.
Taking place Thursday, Oct. 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. the open house will feature a touch-a-truck event at the City’s Engineering and Operations Centre, and a fire safety event at the firehall next door.
The touch-a-truck portion at 1 Killaly Street West will welcome the young and young at heart to climb, learn, and explore different trucks, vehicles, and equipment that help City staff perform their day-to-day jobs. Mayor William Steele will also be on site to judge painted snowplow designs from local schools as part of the annual paint-a-plow initiative.
Director of Public Works Steve Shypowskyj said his team is excited to welcome the public back to the popular annual event.
“We all take great pride in our work and this event lets us not only showcase the equipment we use, but also to educate the community on how we provide an exceptional small-town experience in a big way,” he said.
Meanwhile, next door at the firehall at 3 Killaly Street West, an array of events will promote fire safety for the whole family. Among the activities are:
- cooking safety tips,
- home escape plans,
- fire extinguisher training,
- target practice with a fire hose,
- a dalmatian bouncy castle,
- complimentary refreshments and giveaways, and
- the chance to meet Sparky.
The event will also prepare visitors for the National Fire Protection Agency’s Fire Prevention Week, a national campaign run from Oct. 6 to 12, which will focus on the theme ‘smoke alarms: make them work for you!’
Acting Fire Chief Morgan Alcock said the event and the week of awareness help to promote the idea that fire safety is everyone’s responsibility.
“Understanding the basics of fire safety can save lives in critical moments,” he said. “Join us on Oct. 3 at the open house to learn about fire safety firsthand, meet the people who protect our communities, and explore the various trucks and equipment they use."
Both open house events will be rain or shine and free of charge; however, non-perishable food donations to Port Cares will be appreciated.
