The City of Port Colborne is inviting residents to take part in its annual tree giveaway in recognition of Earth Day, taking place Friday, May 1, at the Port Colborne Farmers’ Market. Residents are asked to bring a non-perishable food item or make a monetary donation in support of Port Cares as part of the program, helping support local families in need
A total of 400 trees will be distributed to Port Colborne residents on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 7:30 a.m., while supplies last. Tree species available include Hackberry, Red Maple, Sycamore, and Black Cherry, with a limit of one tree per household.
The tree giveaway supports the City’s ongoing commitment to expanding and maintaining its urban tree canopy. Currently, Port Colborne’s tree canopy coverage is 32 per cent, with a goal of reaching 40 per cent by 2040. Efforts such as the City’s free tree giveaway support environmental protection, biodiversity, and enhanced quality of life for residents.
“Expanding our urban tree canopy is one of the most meaningful ways we can invest in the long-term sustainability of our community,” says Port Colborne Mayor William Steele. “Initiatives like our tree giveaway are always well received by residents and help them take an active role in supporting our environment and contributing to a greener Port Colborne.”
