Governance review

Following Mayor William Steele’s letter to the Province yesterday outlining Port Colborne’s position on potential changes to municipal governance in Niagara, the City is launching a public engagement process to ensure residents are actively involved in the conversation.

“Port Colborne is a strong and independent community,” said Mayor William Steele. “As these discussions move forward, it’s important that our residents have a voice on any decisions that are made that could impact how our City is governed. We want to hear directly from the people who live and work here.”

As part of the City’s commitment to meaningful consultation, residents are invited to participate in a short survey and attend one of several in-person open houses scheduled for March 12 and March 14. Feedback from residents, business owners and community members will help inform Council’s position as regional governance discussions continue.

“I want to thank the many residents who have already taken the time to reach out, whether through emails to the City, their councillor, Regional Chair Gale, or the Province,” said Mayor William Steele. “These conversations have moved quickly, but this will be a long process. I encourage residents to continue sharing their perspectives and making their voices heard.”

Residents are encouraged to participate in the following ways:

  1. Online surveywww.surveymonkey.com/r/portcolbornegovernancereview
  2. Paper survey: A paper survey will be available at City Hall, the Vale Health & Wellness Centre, and the Port Colborne Public Library.
  3. In-person open houses: City staff and members of Council will host informal drop-in sessions on these dates and locations:
  • Thursday, March 12, 3 to 7 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers
  • Saturday, March 14, 12 to 4 p.m. at the Vale Health & Wellness Centre

The City will also conduct small group discussions with several established community advisory groups, including the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee, the Seniors Advisory Committee, the Healthcare Advisory Committee and the Social Determinants of Health Committee.

Information gathered through the survey and engagement sessions will be compiled and presented to City Council at an upcoming public meeting.
