Mayor Steele and senior staff returned from the 2022 Good Roads Conference feeling positive about their meetings with provincial officials.

“This year’s conference was especially important because it allowed us to talk to decision-makers in person about the key issues and priorities that matter to council and the Port Colborne community,” said Mayor Bill Steele.

Chief administrative officer Scott Luey and manager of strategic initiatives Gary Long joined Mayor Steele in bringing attention to local priorities like infrastructure, housing affordability, growth and development, an Ontario marine strategy, programs and services for Francophone residents and visitors, creating more serviced industrial land, and economic activity including the recovery of the tourism and retail sectors.

The conference ran from Apr. 10 to 13 at Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York hotel and included meetings with:

  • Kelsey Hrappstead, Senior Policy Advisor to the Minister of Francophone Affairs
  • Vincent Ke, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Cultural Industries
  • Vijay Thanigasalam, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation
  • Amarjot Sandhu, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Infrastructure
  • Laurie Scott, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade

“Maintaining strong relationships with upper-tier governments means keeping them informed and up-to-date about what’s happening in Port Colborne,” said Scott Luey, CAO. “Our meetings were positive overall, and we anticipate follow-up conversations will take place in the months ahead.”

The Good Roads Conference is hosted annually by the Ontario Goods Roads Association (OGRA), an organization with interests in transportation infrastructure, and features speeches by industry and political leaders, an exhibitor tradeshow, concurrent sessions and presentations, and networking events.
