Tulips

The Victoria Day long weekend will mark the opening of various seasonal outdoor spaces in Port Colborne.

Beaches

Among the familiar favourites are the City’s Nickel Beach and Centennial-Cedar Bay Beach, which will welcome sand seekers back to the Lake Erie shore.

At Nickel Beach, there are new hourly parking options through the Honk Mobile app available on weekdays and after 4 p.m. on weekends in Zone 2. A variety of other parking options are available, and Port Colborne residents with a PORTicipate Pass are still able to park for free if their pass is displayed in the windshield.

Nickel Beach will see the addition of several environmental initiatives, including dune fencing to help build back the dunes in select areas, the removal of invasive phragmites, and a regular seaweed report. The new report will share updates online and on signage posted at the beach about the current state of the seaweed at Nickel Beach. The online report can be found at www.portcolborne.ca/seaweedreport.

Splashtown will return to the water June 28, and the beach lounger rental program, take-a-toy, leave-a-toy bin, and Dog Zone will all resume at Nickel Beach this year. From Friday to Sunday, and on holidays, Marble Slab Creamery will be set up at Nickel Beach from June 27 until the end of August.

More details on hours of operation, amenities, parking passes and rates, the seaweed report, frequently asked questions and more can be found on www.portcolborne.ca/nickelbeach

Spray Pad

The Discovery Spray Pad, located at H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park, will open for a new season of fun in the sun on Friday, May 16. The Spray Pad will operate from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends until mid-June before beginning a daily schedule that will last until Labour Day. Weekend operations will then resume until Oct. 1.

Marble Slab Creamery will once again be set up next to the Spray Pad and will be opening for the Victoria Day long weekend. They will remain open daily until September 30. Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Parks and washrooms

Washrooms in City parks are now open. Crews have reopened and are maintaining playing fields for youth soccer, girls’ softball, minor baseball, adult slo-pitch leagues; and tennis/pickleball courts.

City buildings closed for Victoria Day

Except for the Vale Health & Wellness Centre and Port Colborne Historical & Marine Museum, all City facilities will be closed May 19 for Victoria Day.
