An open house in Port Colborne will welcome one and all to explore City vehicles and learn helpful lessons about fire safety.

Hosted by the City of Port Colborne, and sponsored by Peters Construction Group, the annual Open House event will take place Thursday, Oct. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m.

The fire safety portion of the open house will take place at the Port Colborne Firehall at 3 Killaly Street West, where visitors can join in a full slate of events, including:

  • Target practice with a fire hose
  • Cooking safety tips
  • Home escape plans
  • A dalmatian bouncy castle
  • Complimentary giveaways and refreshments
  • And more

Port Colborne Fire Chief Stan Double said the fun activities serve as important lessons.

“It’s never too early to start learning about fire safety,” he said. “When dangerous situations arise, it’s often the simple lessons learned at a young age that lead to lives being saved.”

Next door, at the City’s Engineering and Operations Centre at 1 Killaly Street West, the touch-a-truck portion of the open house will encourage those in attendance to climb, learn and explore various trucks, vehicles and equipment that help City staff to perform their daily jobs. New this year will be demonstrations from the water department, with a hands-on chance for kids to repair a watermain. During the proceedings, Mayor William Steele will judge painted snowplow designs from local schools as part of the annual paint-a-plow initiative.

Steele said the chance for the community to touch and climb aboard the equipment helps to provide greater understanding of all of the tasks needed to keep the city at its best.

“It’s fantastic to have an event that welcomes kids and their parents to see first-hand the work our City team does every day,” he said. “Not only are participants getting a first-hand look at the big equipment they see driving around, they may also be learning a bit more about a career they are interested in right in their hometown.”

The City of Port Colborne is thrilled to welcome Peters Construction Group as the presenting sponsor of the Open House for the first time - their generous support helps keep the annual event free for everyone.

As the sponsor of the Open House, Peters Construction Group President Darren Peters said the event is a great way to educate the community while also keeping residents safe.

“We are so happy to be involved in an event that lets young and old learn new lessons about safety and showcases the machines that keep our communities running,” said Peters. “Hopefully everyone who comes out gains a new appreciation for the hard work undertaken by our local firefighters and City employees.”

Both open house events will be rain or shine. The event is free with a cash or non-perishable food donation in support of Port Cares.
