Collage of women

The world comes together for International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8 to celebrate women's achievements and reinforce a commitment to women's equality.

“We strive everyday to build a workplace that encourages the representation and involvement of women.” – CAO Scott Luey

At the City of Port Colborne women are represented across every department:

-         38% of total workforce is female

-         33% of corporate leadership team is female

-         43% of supervisory/management roles are occupied by women

-         22% of council is represented by women.

“To make informed decisions for our diverse community we need diverse representation at the decision-making table, and that includes women. The 2022 municipal election is on Oct. 24, and I encourage women to consider running for election.” – Mayor Bill Steele

In a recent media release from the Niagara Region for the Seat at the Table program, despite being just over half of the Niagara population, women are underrepresented in local government, especially in senior leadership. Women interested in municipal politics are encouraged to participate in the Niagara Region Seat at the Table program that aims to promote understanding, awareness, and confidence through education, mentorship and support to those interested in running for election. The first session, taking place virtually on Thursday, April 7 at 6 p.m., will be open to all women and gender diverse people across all 12 local municipalities. The workshop will inspire and prepare women from underrepresented backgrounds to run for election and change the face of elected councils to better represent the people of Niagara. Register by April 5 for the first session on Niagara Region’s website.

The theme for International Women's Day 2022 is #BreaktheBias.

Imagine a gender equal world.

A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.

A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

A world where difference is valued and celebrated.

Together we can forge women's equality.

Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.
