Tree Giveaway

Residents of Port Colborne are invited to have a tree-riffic Earth Day by attending this year’s free tree giveaway on Friday, April 19.

In celebration of Earth Day, and together with the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) and Sassafras Farms, the City of Port Colborne will give away 425 trees (limit three per household) from 7 to 11:30 a.m. in King George Park during the Port Colborne Farmers’ Market.

City staff will be collecting addresses from residents who participate as part of a project to test the survival rate of the trees planted. It will also assisst with choosing tree species for the city in the future.

This year’s tree varieties include:

  • Silver maple         
  • Butternut hickory
  • White spruce
  • Tamarack
  • Swamp white oak
  • Highbush cranberry
  • Nannyberry

Trees will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.

Staff from Sassafras Farms will be available to provide information about the trees and about pollinator beds.

For residents who cannot attend but are considering planting a tree on their property, the City encourages participation in the year-round tree rebate program. When a tree is purchased from the approved list of species provided by the NPCA guide to native plants, a $50 rebate will be provided.
