“Fire alarms are meant to alarm occupants to exit the residence/building and head to the previously identified meeting spot as part of your escape plan,” said Fire Chief Scott Lawson. “When alarms are disabled it not only puts occupants at risk but prevents fire fighters from quickly identifying and reacting to the area of concern.”

“Fire alarms are only effective if they are working,” said Mayor Bill Steele. “Always ensure your alarms are in working order, and if activated your first concern should always be using an exit identified in your escape plan.”

Port Colborne residents and property owners that require assistance ensuring alarms are working, creating an escape plan, or determining if their buildings are compliant, are encouraged to call Port Colborne Fire & Emergency Services at 905-834-4512.
