After responding to a structure fire on Tuesday, July 22, Port Colborne Fire Chief Stan Double is reminding residents to check their smoke alarms.
At 7:20 a.m., Port Colborne Fire responded to a residential structure fire at 138 Humboldt Parkway.
Upon arrival, crews were met with heavy fire and smoke. An aggressive interior fire attack quickly brought the incident under control.
Thanks to working smoke alarms, six residents in the building were alerted to the fire and had self-evacuated upon the fire department’s arrival.
Chief Double says working smoke alarms were critical in ensuring the safe evacuation of all residents.
“Having smoke alarms working exactly as they are supposed to is the reason a serious situation today did not become deadly,” he says. “This is a timely reminder for everyone in Port Colborne to test their smoke alarms regularly and to ensure they are in good working order. Working smoke alarms save lives.”
