The City of Port Colborne welcomes new family doctor to the community starting this September.

As announced at last night’s Council meeting, the City is thrilled to welcome Dr. Matthew Vandenberg to Port Colborne, who will be taking over Dr. Alan Daniel’s practice effective Sept. 7, 2021. Originally from Orillia, Dr. Vandenberg studied at St. James School of Medicine and completed clinical rotations throughout the United States and Canada. After completing his family medicine residency at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, he’s been practicing in eastern Canada for several years before deciding to move to Niagara.

“I am currently a family physician in Fredericton, News Brunswick, however I’m originally from Ontario,” said Dr. Matthew Vandenberg. “My wife grew up in Port Colborne, and as we managed the COVID-19 pandemic, we realized this was a good opportunity to move back to Ontario to be close to family. We are delighted to be moving to Port Colborne and I look forward to starting my new practice and taking over for Dr. Daniel.”

Working closely with physician recruiter, Jill Croteau from Niagara Region Public Health, the City of Port Colborne is committed to finding solutions to increasing primary healthcare services in the community. It’s important to continue to actively participate in physician recruitment, especially in areas like Port Colborne, where travelling to a large city centre may create barriers. Niagara Region Public Health has a comprehensive recruitment strategy that acts as the first point of contact for physicians looking to work in Niagara. Once a relationship is established, Ms. Croteau connects with incoming physicians to match them with their ideal practice model and location based on preferences.

“On behalf of City Council and staff, we want to welcome Dr. Vandenberg to Port Colborne,” said Mayor Bill Steele. “As South Niagara continues to grow, we’re strategically working with the Region to attract new physicians to the area. Healthcare is a top priority, and we recognize accessibility is vital to our residents. As Dr. Vandenberg settles into his new role, I’m confident he will soon feel at home in our vibrant and engaging community.”

A complete list of physicians taking on new patients in Niagara can be found on the Region’s website. For additional resources and support in finding a doctor, information can be found through Health Care Connect.
