Youth-Advisory-panel

As part of Niagara Region’s efforts to hear from as many voices as possible, applications are currently being accepted from youth ages 13-19 to participate on the new Regional Chair’s Youth Advisory Panel.

The youth advisory panel, which will meet a minimum of six times per year, will have members from all 12 municipalities in an effort to bring a region-wide perspective to the panel’s discussions. Panel members will provide advice on policies, programs and services that affect young people across Niagara, while also acting as a centralized “hub” for information sharing between the region’s 12 communities.

While all areas of the Region’s operations could be discussed, potential areas of focus for the panel may include the natural environment, public transportation, housing and homelessness and mental health. The panel will also provide advice to the Regional Chair regarding ways to boost engagement among youth in Regional decision making.

Outside of region-wide representation, applications are sought from youth who have leadership experience, an understanding of the importance of local government and who have a diverse background. Prior experience on an advisory board is not required, but applicants are encouraged to share examples of times they had to cooperate in a large group to come to consensus and arrive at a final decision.

Panel members will serve a one-year term, with an optional extension for an additional year. In addition to the 12 voting members, a member of Regional Council will participate on the panel, providing advice and guidance were required.

Applications are being accepted until Oct. 18, 2021, with the inaugural panel meeting being held later in November. Interested youth are invited to visit the Regional Chair's Youth Advisory Panel to complete an application.
