About Recreation and Parks Month

June marks the beginning of Recreation and Parks Month. The Niagara region is home to many picturesque and unique outdoor and recreational areas, including many green spaces, sporting areas, and outdoor play parks across Port Colborne. This scavenger hunt will take you on a tour through some of Port Colborne's parks and recreational spaces and invite you to explore the city while enjoying the lovely warm weather in a new way.

We encourage you to keep in mind that the Niagara Region is situated on treaty land. This land is steeped in the rich history of the First Nations such as the Hatiwendaronk (Hat-i-wen-DA-ronk), the Haudenosaunee (Hoe-den-no-SHOW-nee), and the Anishinaabe (Ah-nish-ih-NAH-bey), including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. There are many First Nations, Metis, and Inuit people from across Turtle Island that live and work in Niagara today. The City of Port Colborne stands with all Indigenous people, past and present, in promoting the wise stewardship of the lands on which we live. Check out native-land.ca to learn more about Native territories and treaties.

About What3Words

This contest makes use of the What3Words app. What3Words is a public safety and navigation app that allows you to report your location down to 3 square meters using a unique set of 3 words. It is an excellent safety tool for reporting your location if you are caught in an emergency in an unfamiliar area, in an open field, or on open water.

You can report the 3 words associated with your location to emergency services and they will be able to pinpoint your precise location more quickly and accurately. Each unique set of words is random and is permanently fixed to those specific 3 square meters. Visit what3words.com to test it out and learn more.

How to PORTicipate in the Scavenger Hunt

Print your Scavenger Hunt Passport or pick one up at one of the following locations:

  • Port Colborne Public Library
  • The Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum
  • Vale Health and Wellness Centre
  • Port Colborne City Hall
  • The City's booth at Market Days in front of City Hall every Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Each set of 3 words on your Passport is associated with a specific spot within one of Port Colborne's beautiful recreation spaces or parks. Simply type the three words for the mission you want to complete into the What3Words search bar and it will navigate you to the location.

At the site, take a photo of the poster with that location's set of words printed on it and DM it to @CityofPortColborne on Instagram or email your photos to communications@portcolborne.ca to complete the missions.

Visit all locations between June 5 and June 30, 2023 and submit all 8 photos before 6:00 p.m. on June 30 and you will be entered for a chance to win 1 of 3 $50 gift cards to a local business of your choosing!

Winners will be contacted over email or Instagram DM (depending on your method of submission) to collect their prize.
