Municipal Accommodation Tax to begin Feb. 1

Beginning Feb. 1, 2025, a new mandatory Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) will be enforced in Port Colborne under By-law 7283/105/24.
The tax applies to all short-term accommodation establishments, which must now add a 4% (plus HST) charge to the room rate.
The MAT is only applied to accommodation providers. It is not levied on residents or other businesses, unless they stay overnight at an accommodation provider within the city.

Dates: Beginning Wednesday, January 8, 2025, until Wednesday, January 15, 2025 (tentatively).
Location: George Street between Erie Street and Elm Street.
Details: George Street will be closed for water and sanitary service installation. The closure may extend into Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
Detour: Local traffic will be able to use the posted detour route.

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) advises the public about upcoming infrastructure work at Lock 8 in Port Colborne, beginning January 2, 2025. This work is part of the $180 million, three-year investment in the Welland Canal, announced last month. It involves the installation of hands-free mooring (HFM) units at Lock 8, the final lock in the canal to receive this technology.

City of Port Colborne announces leadership transition: Bryan Boles appointed Interim CAO

The City of Port Colborne’s CAO, Scott Luey, has chosen to step down from his role for personal reasons, effective December 31. Mayor Bill Steele, on behalf of City Council, staff, and the residents of Port Colborne, thanks Mr. Luey for his nearly ten years of service to the community and wishes him and his family the best for the future.
Director of Corporate Services/Treasurer, Bryan Boles, will serve as Interim CAO, beginning today.
